Gene Jarvis: Franklin Roosevelt Profile
"So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself - nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance." Inaugural Address, 1933. When FDR took office, America was ready to do battle with the Great Depression. Five days after inauguration, FDR called Congress into a special session that passed daring "New Deal" measures designed to save the economy. In 1936, the President easily won reelection. His second term was marked by growing unrest in Europe. In fact, FDR would probably have stepped down after his second term were it not for the threat of Hitler. Nearly eleven months into his third term, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, plunging America into war. In 1944, FDR again won reelection, but the end was in sight for the President. On April 12, 1945, before the peace treaty was signed, a weary President Roosevelt died.
