Gene Jarvis: Richard M. Nixon Profile "I do not offer a life of uninspiring ease. I do not call for a life of grim sacrifice. I ask you to join in a high adventure -- one as rich as humanity itself and exciting as the times we live in. " Inaugural Address 1969. The first President to resign office to avoid impeachment, Richard Nixon committed transgressions which cast a shadow over the tremendous good he accomplished for his country. Although facing a hostile Congress, by all estimations, Nixon's first term was a resounding success. He withdrew troops from Vietnam and renewed relations with China. By overwhelming mandate, the people reelected Nixon in 1972. However, in the midst of the election, men connected with the reelection committee burglarized Democratic Headquarters. Although the President denied any knowledge of the break-in, a cover-up involving the President was exposed. On August 9, 1974 Richard Nixon resigned the Presidency.
