Gene Jarvis: Abraham Lincoln Profile Raised in a log cabin, self-educated, tall, thin, big-boned and homely, with enormous strength and brooding sensitivity, "Honest Abe" became the 16th president of the United States on March 4, 1861. On April 12, when Confederate artillery fired on the Union garrison at Fort Sumter, South Carolina, the Civil War began. Two days after Fort Sumter fell, Lincoln called for 75,000 men to join the army. When Union troops were decisively defeated at Bull Run on July 21, Lincoln realized the war would be a long one. In the beginning, it was mostly a fight to preserve the Union. But by late summer of 1862, Lincoln felt it was time for a change in policy toward slavery. Following the Union victory at the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862, he issued his Emancipation Proclamation, declaring that all slaves "are, and hence-forward shall be, free," thus paving the way for the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. On November 19, 1863, during ceremonies to dedicate the cemetery on the Gettysburg battlefield, Lincoln gave an address that was soon considered one of history's most masterly speeches. Following several Union victories, he was reelected in 1864. On April 9, 1865, the war ended when General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. Five days later, on the night of April 14, the man who had by now earned the title "Father Abraham" was attending Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C., when he was shot and killed by John Wilkes Booth.
