Steve Carter: Will Rogers
"Shucks, I was just an old cowhand that had a little luck. Why all this here fuss about me?" drawled the homespun philosopher who never met a man he didn't like. Nearly a half century has passed since Will Rogers spoke those words, but his legacy proves he was much more than that. People try to categorize him as cowboy, entertainer, humorist; he was all of these and more to those who knew and loved him. His great friend, singer John McCormack, summed up the world's deep mourning when Rogers died -- "A smile has disappeared from the lips of America, and her eyes are suffused with tears. . . ." Truly, this great American left behind him an unmatched legacy of infectious, spirited humor and warm, earthy philosophy. This brilliant cowboy philosopher lifted the spirit of Americans time and again with his clever wit. Even during the devastating Depression days, Rogers brought a glimmer of hope with his "steady stream of sparkling common sense," claimed Lowell Thomas. Typical of his grassroots humor was Rogers' philosophy about the Depression. Likening it to a snake, he mused that if a snake bites you, "you ain't going to stop and study out where he come from . . . you want to start figuring on what to do with yourself right then." Rogers believed that no amount of rationalizing or explaining would change things and that keeping faith in America's future provided the only solution. His determined faith helped carry this nation through one of the worst periods in its history.
