Gene Boyer: Alexander Hamilton Alexander Hamilton was a gallant soldier, financial wizard, administrative genius, political philosopher, profound statesman, and one of the architects of the Union. Born of a French mother and a Scottish father on the island of St. Nevis, he was sent by relatives to New York at the age of fifteen. He entered King's College and within two years he became not only a leader of the student body, but a pamphleteer for the American cause of independence. With the outbreak of war, he joined an artillery company and saw service at White Plains, Monmouth, Princeton, and Yorktown. He attracted the attention of Washington, who made him his aide-de-camp. An ardent nationalist, he wrote the larger part of the Federalist Papers. Washington made him Secretary of State where he pushed through a broad program that assured solvency for America. He is also acknowledged as the greatest of our Secretaries of the Treasury. Hamilton also became the leader of the Federalists; as his great rival, Jefferson, was the leader of the Republicans. In 1800, when the Presidency was in dispute between Jefferson and Aaron Burr, Hamilton intervened to put Jefferson in the White House by swinging Federalist votes for Jefferson. For this, Burr never forgave him. Three years later Burr challenged his rival to a duel. Hamilton fired into the air, Burr fired to kill -- and did. Artwork Copyright © 1977 Unicover Corporation.
