Mel Crawford: Thomas Gallaudet
Born in 1787, in the historic city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet was blessed with the ability to learn and teach. In fact, at the tender age of fifteen, Gallaudet was already a student at Yale University, where he studied law. After graduation and several years of searching for his true life's ambitions, young Gallaudet became acquainted with Alice Cogswell -- a small deaf child. Fascinated with how bright the child seemed, Gallaudet attempted to teach her the names of certain objects. After finding young Alice a very teachable student, Thomas Gallaudet became obsessed with learning all he could about teaching the deaf. He traveled to Europe and studied in the finest schools for the deaf, both in England and in France. When finally he learned all he could on the subject, Gallaudet returned to America where he opened America's first free school for the deaf, which was established in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1817. Despite ill health and other discouraging circumstances, Gallaudet became the principal of the school. In this position, he was able to train a good number of men in his profession ... men who later became heads of similar schools, and carried on Gallaudet's important work with the deaf.
