Gene Jarvis: William Taft Profile Although William Howard Taft's great desire was to sit on the high court, he won the Presidency in 1908. Taft shrank from the "Bully Pulpit" of his predecessor. Nonetheless, his administration followed Roosevelt policy and made a name for itself in trust busting. Among other achievements of his time were the establishment of the parcel post and postal savings programs. Despite Taft's accomplishments, however, Roosevelt soon longed to return to the Presidency -- a wish that split the Republican Party and gave Woodrow Wilson the victory. Taft's greatest joy in life came in 1921 when President Harding appointed him Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, making him the only man to hold both his country's highest executive and judicial posts.
