Gene Jarvis: Lyndon B. Johnson Profile The great Senator from Texas, Lyndon Baines Johnson, was perhaps the most persuasive floor leader the U.S. Senate has ever known. With him as his running mate, John F. Kennedy won the Presidency in 1960. Then, on November 22, 1963, President Kennedy was assassinated and Lyndon Johnson became America's thirty-sixth President. The days that followed were memorable. Not since FDR's unforgettable "one hundred days" had America seen more legislation ramrodded through Congress. The Civil Rights Bill, an Anti-Poverty Program, a Food Stamp Plan and Job Corps were all born in 1964. That year, Johnson easily defeated his opponent for the Presidency. Yet, as President Johnson escalated the Vietnam War, his popularity plummeted. In 1968, President Johnson did not seek reelection.
