Gene Jarvis: Benjamin Harrison Profile Benjamin Harrison's clean politics helped earn him his party's Presidential nomination. In the campaign he let others in the party make promises that won him the election, but which severely crippled his performance in the White House. For, when it came time to appoint his cabinet, Harrison discovered "They have sold out every place to pay the election expenses." There were a few glittering achievements in the Harrison Presidency, like the forming of the Commercial Bureau of American Republics, later the Pan American Union. In addition, he added six states to the Union and opened the Oklahoma territory to settlement. However, despite his accomplishments, in the 1892 election, he lost to Grover Cleveland.
