Gene Jarvis: Calvin Coolidge Profile On August 3, 1923, Calvin Coolidge was sworn in as President on the death of President Harding. Silent Cal, as his critics called him, had listened his way up the Republican ladder to the Vice Presidency. However, years earlier, during the Boston policemen's strike of 1919, a younger Coolidge, then Governor of Massachusetts, had made his opinions known, winning the respect of people across America. "There is no right to strike against the public safety by anybody, anywhere, anytime," he cried. After serving out his predecessor's term, Coolidge was elected President in his own right. But, these were not happy years for Coolidge since during the campaign, his young son had died. In 1928, he did not seek reelection.
