Gene Jarvis: Harry Truman Profile On the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman became President, witnessing the birth of the United Nations which FDR had so fervently supported. Only four months into office, he invited the Japanese to surrender or face "utter destruction." Soon two atomic bombs fell on Japan, bringing their unconditional surrender. Following the war, Truman faced the threat of Communist expansion and the near collapse of Europe's economy. The Marshall Plan was Truman's answer to the European situation. The Communists proved a tougher problem as they moved to take over South Korea. Now elected in his own right, Truman sent American troops to ward off the threat. In 1952, his term up, Truman retired to Missouri.
