In 1948, Luis Muñoz Marin became the first popularly elected governor of Puerto Rico. Election to this prestigious post was not, however, the climax of this man's important accomplishments in his native land, but the beginning of even further contributions to the welfare of his people and their country. Born in San Juan on February 18, 1898, Marin was educated at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and worked for a time as a writer and translator in New York. In 1926, he returned to San Juan to become the editor of the Puerto Rican newspaper La Democracia. This work sparked his interest in politics and led to his election to the Puerto Rican Senate in 1932, where he founded the Popular Democratic Party and then rose to the Senate presidency. Though he was originally a spokesman for independence, Marin decided that increased autonomy in continuing association with the United States was economically the best posture for Puerto Rico, and his work to achieve this stance paved the way for the unique self-governing commonwealth status reached by Puerto Rico in 1952. Marin's activities also transformed Puerto Rico from the "Poorhouse of the Caribbean" into one of the most successful economies in the area.
