David K. Stone: Henry Edward Heinemann In 1926, Edward H. Heinemann started his aviation career as a draftsman for the Douglas Aircraft Company. A year into his career, Heinemann was named Chief Draftsman for International Aircraft and soon joined Moreland Aircraft Company as Assistant Chief Engineer. In 1930, Heinemann joined Northrop Aircraft Corporation only to leave the company in 1936 for another opportunity at the Douglas Aircraft Company. It was while working at Douglas that Edward H. Heinemann achieved his greatest triumphs in aircraft design. During his illustrious and long aviation career, Heinemann was responsible either totally or in part for the design and development of more than twenty outstanding military aircraft. Heinemann and his staff were also responsible for the development of a number of innovative aircraft components and weapons such as ejection seats and cartridge ejector bomb racks. In 1962, Edward H. Heinemann was named as the Corporate President -- Engineering with General Dynamics, a position he held until his retirement in 1973.
