David K. Stone: Ira C. Eaker
No United States military officer better exemplifies the traditions and high standards of military service to America than Lieutenant General Ira Clarence Eaker. Beginning thirty meritorious years of military service in 1917, Eaker served admirably as a military pilot. A dedicated air corps officer, Ira whetted his flying skills and became one of America's first military aviators to receive the coveted U.S. Distinguished Flying Cross for his participation in the U.S. Army's Pan-American Goodwill Flight of 1926 and 1927. True to his stalwart character, in 1936 Eaker completed the first transcontinental flight using only instruments, a feat that would serve him well in war-torn years to come. For in the first days of World War II, General Eaker was appointed to organize the eighth bomber command. Subsequently, on August 17, 1942, General Eaker personally led the first U.S. B-17 bombing raid on occupied Europe. Brilliant accomplishments such as these led to Ira's appointment as commander of the Mediterranean Allied Forces in 1944 -- a position that allowed Eaker to plan and lead the first shuttle-bombing mission on German strongholds in Russia. Ira Clarence Eaker was inducted into the International Aerospace Hall of Fame on August 15, 1981.
