Born in Frankfurt, Germany on June 26, 1898, Willi Messerschmitt made his first flight in a glider at the age of 14 and, just three years later, constructed and flew a glider of his own design. Totally captivated by the idea of manned flight, Messerschmitt enrolled in the Munich Technical University and, in 1923, established his own aircraft company, an enterprise destined to become Germany's largest aircraft and space company, Messerschmitt-Boelkow-Blohm. After building a number of sailplanes, Professor Willi (as his countrymen called him) turned his attention to powered flight. Soon, efficient aircraft became synonymous with the Messerschmitt name. In 1934 Messerschmitt designed his most famous plane, the Me 109 light fighter. A total of thirty-five thousand of the deadly 109's were built enabling the German Luftwaffe to rule the skies at the beginning of World War II. Later, in 1942, Messerschmitt's Me 262 became the world's first mass-produced jet fighter plane. Following the war, Messerschmitt turned his attention to designing prefabricated houses and sewing machines but, by 1952, he was designing aircraft for Spain and Egypt. He soon returned as Chairman of Messerschmitt-Boelkow-Blohm and, after retirement, served as honorary chairman until his death in 1978.
