Brian Sanders: Lord Trenchard, Father of the Royal Air Force Great Britain's Royal Air Force was created in 1918 when the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service were officially combined. In 1986, Great Britain celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the reorganization of the RAF into the commands which carried the service through its most challenging years. In honor of this anniversary, Great Britain issued five stamps featuring five of Great Britain's greatest fighting planes and men who helped build the RAF into the force it is today. This artwork honors Lord Trenchard, the Father of the Royal Air Force, a modern British fighter plane, the Tornado and historic British aircraft. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood® First Day Cover for the Great Britain RAF 50th Anniversary block of four stamps issued September 16, 1986.
