Brian Sanders: Lord Hugh Caswall Dowding and Hawker Hurricane As a member of Great Britain's Air Council, Lord Hugh Caswall Dowding urged decisions which eventually turned the course of history toward freedom in World War II. He did this through his insistence that the Royal Air Force (RAF) use metal rather than wood construction for its planes. In 1936, Dowding was appointed the first Commander-in-Chief, RAF Fighter Command, responsible for the air defense of the entire United Kingdom. In this position, he worked feverishly to perfect radar and the fighter aircraft Hurricane. History would show that Dowding's foresight in developing both these defenses contributed much to the RAF's victory in the Battle of Britain in 1940. The Hawker Hurricane was the first fighter aircraft in the world to have eight machine-guns. First deliveries of the aircraft were made in late 1937 and by 1939 the RAF had nineteen Hurricane squadrons. The Hurricane was astonishingly versatile and rugged. Its armament was progressively increased and augmented by bombs and rockets. Best remembered for its amazing feats in the Battle of Britain, the Hurricane in 1940 shot down more enemy aircraft than all other home defense elements combined. It fought in France, Russia, North Africa and Burma.
