David K. Stone: James McDonnell James McDonnell was born in 1899, in an era of steam engines and horse and buggies ... and just four years prior to the historic first airplane flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Fascinated with flying from childhood, McDonnell's insatiable appetite for knowledge and experience in the aviation industry acted as a guiding force in his life. James McDonnell went straight for the heart of the matter by earning a degree in physics from Princeton and Masters of Science from MIT in the newly formed discipline of aeronautical engineering. Riding the crest of American technology into a new century, McDonnell continually proved his extraordinary abilities over a highly successful fifty-six year career in aviation. Beginning as a design engineer, McDonnell's desire and unparalleled knowledge of aviation led him to the chairmanship of one of the world's aerospace giants -- the McDonnell-Douglas Corporation. Among his many important achievements are the FH-1 Phantom jet; Mercury, America's first manned spacecraft; the F-4 Phantom, in service for twenty-eight years in ten countries and for which he received the Collier Trophy; the DC-10 wide body jet; and finally, the world premier F-15 fighter jet.
