E.D. Aniskin: 1928 USSR Airplane U-2 In 1926, Soviet aircraft designers faced the important task of developing a safe primary training plane to be used in flying schools. The plane needed to be simple to produce and maintain. And, it was to be designed around the one hundred horsepower engine designed earlier by A. D. Shvetsov and N. M. Ocromeshco. Through repeated efforts, the plane was finally built in January of 1928. Decidedly superior to earlier models, the new U-2 or Training-2, was praised by all who tested it. For many years the U-2 planes were used exclusively for primary training in flying schools and clubs. However, a large number were constructed as light night bombers and some of these were used in aviation regiments during World War II. One of these World War II regiments was staffed entirely by women who had previously flown the U-2 in the flying clubs. This female regiment flew an astounding twenty-four thousand fighting missions. Following the war, the U-2 was renamed the Policarpov-second, or PO-2. The construction of this biplane was a wood frame covered with linen with some assemblies of mild steel. The PO-2 had an unusually large rudder to prevent the plane from stalling into a midair spin. Since this sturdy plane could take off and land on ground not prepared as a runway, one version of the PO-2 was used as an agricultural plane, making it the first airplane to be used agriculturally.
