David K. Stone: Frederick Rohr
Frederick H. Rohr is a classic example of the American success story. Born in Hoboken, New Jersey, on May 10, 1896, Rohr was the operator of a successful sheet metal business by the time he was thirty. In 1928, he began to express interest in the budding aircraft industry, and accepted a position as factory manager of Prudden Aircraft Company. Through the next ten years, Rohr served in like positions at Boeing and Ryan Companies, using his natural genius to formulate advanced concepts for the mass production of aircraft sub-assembly components. In the next few years, he carefully gathered a few key men and summoned all his initiative and courage to launch the great Rohr Aircraft Corporation. With his own company, Rohr was free to experiment and develop many of the ideas that had been taking shape in his mind for years. The package concept of production, advanced drop hammer forging, over-pressed forming of parts, and the use of stainless steel and honeycomb construction were all successfully developed by Rohr and his men. Today, the Rohr Corporation produces a variety of products including power packages for every major aircraft company in the nation. Rohr died on November 8, 1965, but his name and story live on in the International Aerospace Hall of Fame in San Diego. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood® Frederick H.
