David K. Stone: William A. Bishop After graduating from the Royal Military College, William Avery Bishop joined the British Flying Corps and became one of the most famous pilots of World War I. Fearless, aggressive and dedicated, Bishop honed his flying skills to the ultimate level of perfection. As pilot of the Nieuport 17, depicted on this Commemorative Cover, Bishop won seventy-two confirmed victories in the skies over France and Germany. He achieved twelve of these conquests in only twenty-five days, a record that still stands today. Bishop's heroic flights in the Nieuport Superbebe established the small French bomber's dominance in the skies and proved that the Superbebe outmaneuvered the German Fokker. One of Bishop's most famous feats was his successful June 2, 1917, intruder mission on an enemy aerodrome, for which he earned Canada's first Air Victoria Cross, the highest award for valor in the British armed services. Bishop also received the Distinguished Service Order and the Military Cross, becoming the only man to receive all three awards in a single ceremony. After the war Bishop retired, but he was called back to duty as an Air Marshal in 1937. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood® William A.
