David K. Stone: James H. Kindelberger A man of great vision and strength, Virginia-born James Kindelberger pioneered the American aviation industry, nurturing its growth to world leadership. Known to his friends as "Dutch," Kindelberger built more planes during his lifetime than any other man in history. As a boy, he taught himself mechanical engineering and eventually went to work for the United States Army Corps of Engineers. At age 21, he passed the entrance examinations for Carnegie Institute of Technology. But, World War I intervened. After the war, the young engineer went to work for Douglas Aircraft Company and, by 1934, he was president of the newly-formed North American Aviation Company. Throughout World War II, Kindelberger spearheaded North America's production of military planes including the AT-6 trainer, the P-51 Mustang and the B-25 Mitchell bomber. After the war, Kindelberger led the company into the jet age, producing the Navy's first jet fighter and the Air Force's first four-jet bomber, and later the F-86 Sabre Jet, and the supersonic F-100 Super Sabre. Before his death in 1962, Kindelberger encouraged the dawn of the space age, experimenting with space research. He was elected to the International Aerospace Hall of Fame in 1977.
