David K. Stone: Marcel Dassault
Marcel Dassault, one of France's first aeronautical engineers, was born Marcel Bloch in Paris on January 22, 1892. When World War I began, the young engineer designed aircraft for the French defense. By the time the war ended, he had built a successful observation plane, the SEA-4 but there was no demand for his airplane. After the war this innovative designer soon returned to the aircraft industry and started his own company. When World War II threatened to erupt, Bloch's factory was nationalized. Shortly after the outbreak of war, France was defeated and, in 1944, he was arrested and sent to Buchenwald. The Nazis offered him exemption if he promised to produce planes for Germany. The patriotic engineer refused and remained a prisoner. When the war ended, he was rescued and returned to France. At this time both Marcel Bloch and his brother, General Paul Bloch, adopted Dassault as their legal name, a code name General Bloch used during the French resistance movement which both the brothers supported. Once back in his native country, Dassault became the leading aircraft builder in France. His company, Dassault-Breguet, produced the first European aircraft to fly at Mach 2. This successful Dassault jet, the Mirage, is depicted on this painting. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood® Marcel Dassault Commemorative Cover.
