James Doolittle was born on December 14, 1896, in Alameda, California. Just twenty-six years later he gained national respect when he became the first pilot to fly across the United States in less than twenty-four hours. In 1925 he achieved another aviation first. During the National Air Races he pushed the nose of his Curtiss Hawk P-1 under, and kept it in this position, until he completed the first outside loop, a stunt aviators believed was impossible. During this period of his life Doolittle worked on the development of blind flying equipment, including the artificial horizon and the directional gyroscope. In 1929 these instruments proved that flying was feasible twenty-four hours a day in almost any weather. In addition to this brilliant achievement, Doolittle was an outstanding racing pilot. In 1935, however, he retired from racing to devote his life to engineering. His retirement from active flying was short-lived. Just seven years later, on April 18, 1942, the bantam-sized lieutenant colonel made his most famous flight. Doolittle took off from the deck of the carrier ship Hornet and, leading sixteen airplanes, he conducted a bombing raid on Tokyo that spread panic throughout Japan. Now known as Doolittle's Tokyo Raid, this maneuver was one of the few bright spots in the first months of World War II.
