David K. Stone: Clarence "Kelly" Johnson Clarence Johnson was born on February 27, 1910, in Ishpeming, Michigan. He attended the University of Michigan and received both a B.S. and an M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering. In 1933, he joined Lockheed where he worked initially as flight-test engineer and aerodynamicist before before chief research engineer in 1938. His creative thinking immediately led to the development of many new innovations in the aerospace industry. In 1944, he designed and produced -- in just 143 days -- the first American jet fighter, the famed Lockheed P-80 Shooting Sar. This revolutionary plane spawned a family that totaled 9,292 Lockheed airplanes. Yet, the P-80 was only one milestone in his illustrious career. Of the forty designs which bear his mark, nineteen were the sole creation of his genius. Among his most outstanding designs were the P-39 Lightning, P-80 Shooting Star, the Constellation, F-104 Starfighter, U-2 Reconnaissance Aircraft, as well as the world's fastest aircraft, YF-12 and Sr-71.
