Rick Broome: Eddie Rickenbacker
The American legend of Edward Rickenbacker began in Columbus, Ohio, where he was born on October 8, 1890. His father died when he was only twelve, and Eddie immediately quit school to help support the family. Spot jobs filled his days, until he became a mechanic for the budding automobile industry. Talented, bright and hardworking, he soon became a driver and, by the age of sixteen, was driving the world's fastest cars at record breaking speeds. It wasn't long before World War I put an end to his lucrative career. Rickenbacker entered the service as a driver for "Black Jack" Pershing's American Expeditionary Force. Once he reached France, however, several friends, avoiding government red tape, managed to enroll him in pilot training even though he was over the age limit and did not have the required college degree. In March 1918, he was transferred to the 94th Aero Squadron, the famous Hat-in-the-Ring group. Just two months later, Rickenbacker achieved his first combat victory, and through the rest of the war took on the best the Germans had to offer, including Baron von Richthofen's famous "Flying Circus." At the end of the war, Rickenbacker had earned nineteen decorations for bravery, was officially credited with twenty-six individual victories and was known as America's "Ace of Aces."
