David K. Stone: Sir Alliot Verdon-Roe Optimistic, persevering and indestructible are perhaps the best words to describe pioneer aircraft designer Sir Alliott Verdon-Roe. Born April 26, 1877, in Patricroft, England, Roe began designing flying model aeroplanes in 1907 and, just a year later, became one of the first men in Great Britain to fly a powered aircraft. From that moment, there was no stopping him. Living and working in a dirt-floored wooden shack, he labored tirelessly to design and build maneuverable aircraft. Testing his own designs, Roe crashed his creations frequently. In fact, in 1910, at a flying meet he experienced the worst accident of his career. Yet he returned from the hospital the same day and crashed another triplane. But Roe's undaunted spirit, combined with exceptional designing talent ultimately paid off. Incorporated in 1910, his Avro Company was soon producing high quality, innovative aircraft. Among his early accomplishments was development of the first single steering column, the first British hydroplane and the first enclosed cabin aircraft. In addition, his famed Avro 504 not only served the British valiantly during World War I, but remained a standard RAF trainer until 1933. In 1929, the British government conferred knighthood upon him for his distinguished service to aviation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood® Sir Alliot Verdon-Roe Commemorative Cover.
