David K. Stone: Frank W. Fink
During his 40-year career as an aeronautical engineer, Frank Fink contributed to the development of many new and innovative aircraft. At Convair/General Dynamics Company, he was project engineer on the famous B-24 bomber. More B-24 Liberators were built than any other planes in World War II. Also during Fink's tenure at Convair, the B-36 was introduced. This plane was, in many ways, the most impressive bomber ever built. It dwarfed the then monstrous B-29 and could travel at 435 miles per hour. Another Convair aircraft was the XF2Y Sea Dart, first produced in 1952. This revolutionary plane was an attempt to build a seaborne combat jet fighter. The Sea Dart floated on a conventional boat hull, but rose up on hydro-skis for take-off. This type remains the only supersonic seaplane. In 1954, Convair built the first fixed-wing Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) aircraft in history to hover on the power of its engine, and rise and descend without forward movement and without using a separate lifting rotor. In 1955, Fink joined Ryan Aeronautical Company as vice president for research and engineering. There, he pioneered new approaches to vertical take-off aircraft, such as the X-13 Vertijet in 1957. He left Ryan to form his own company, San Diego Aircraft Engineering, Inc., in 1965. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood® Commemorative Cover for Frank W. Fink.
