David K. Stone: Louis Breguet
Louis Breguet's first "gyroplane" flew on September 29, 1907 -- with the aid of four men on the ground who supported the rotors with poles. Unable to surmount the difficulties of stabilizing the new aircraft, M. Breguet turned his attention to more conventional planes. In 1911 he set a speed record for 10 kilometers with one of his biplanes. The Breguet 14, built for service in World War I, was a quick, light bomber which could be heavily armed. With its introduction, bomber crews became the elite, and French morale received a tremendous boost. The 14 was replaced by the Breguet 19, a two-seat light bomber with a fabric-covered metal framework, some of which were still in service in 1940. In 1919, Breguet founded the Compagnie des Messageries Aériennes, which ultimately became Air France. The biggest biplane flying boat in passenger service in France in the 1920's was the Breguet 530 Saigon, with three-class accommodations for 19 or 20 passengers. France continued to expand its air routes, and by 1937 many single-engine Breguet 280T's were in service with Air France. But during all these years, Louis Breguet never gave up on the idea of a vertical-lift aircraft. Finally, in 1935, he produced the Breguet-Donald Gyroplane Laboratoire, the forerunner of modern helicopters. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood® Louis C. Breguet Commemorative Cover.
