Charles Knotek: Avro Canada CF-100/Military Aircraft Soon after World War II ended, Canadian authorities decided that the Royal Canadian Air Force needed an all-weather, day and night fighter craft capable of providing air defense for Canada and North America against possible soviet bomber threats. However, no such aircraft existed at the time, and the Royal Air Force was determined to avoid over-dependence on foreign manufacturers. Thus, in 1946, the Avro Canada CF-100 was designed by A.V. Roe Canada (later known as Avro Aircraft), becoming the first modern fighter aircraft produced in Canada. On January 19, 1950, nearly four years later, it was successfully test flown by Jan Jurakowski. The CF-100 was flown at a speed in excess of Mach 1, becoming the world's first straight-winged combat aircraft to break the sound barrier. This twin-engined, long-range fighter carried a pilot and navigator/radio operator. A total of five variations of the CF-100 were produced -- Mark 1, the original test and development aircraft; Mark 2, a dual trainer without armament; Mark 3, the first fighter with guns; Mark 4, the second fighter with guns and rockets; and Mark 5, high-altitude fighter with extended wings. Avro eventually manufactured six hundred ninety-two of the aircraft.
