Charles Knotek: Hawker Hurricane
Feared, praised, and exalted for daring exploits and dangerous missions the airmen of World War II ended, once and for all, the tumultuous debates over the value of aircraft as a weapon of modern warfare. Once it was found possible to synchronize the firing of an automatic gun through a rotating propeller, the real value of aircraft as a fighting force became obvious and a race for construction began. Subsequently, many thousands of airplanes were produced, resulting in great air strengths during World War II, for allies and enemies alike. The Hurricane Hawker, though designed in 1933 by Hawker Aircraft prior to the war, did not undergo heavy construction until during the war when the Canadian Car and Foundry Co. of Montreal produced more than fourteen hundred of them. Even so, the name of the Hurricane holds a prominent spot in the history of the Second World War. Champion of the "Battle of Britain" against German troops, the Hurricane helped add one of the most glorious chapters in the history of the Royal Air Force by shooting down more enemy aircraft than all other air and ground defenses combined. The first Royal Canadian Air Force squadron to go into this action was No. 1 "Caribou" Squadron which fought its first battle in Hurricanes on August 26, 1940. The Hawker Hurricane also fought in all war theaters and was flown by the air forces of Canada, the British Commonwealth, Belgium, Egypt, Finland, Iran, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Turkey and Yugoslavia.
