Charles Knotek: Avro Lancaster From the beginning of World War II, intrepid young airmen inspired countless legends and dramatic stories of individual heroism, brushes with death and miraculous escapes. In their heavily armed bombers, they created a new kind of cavalry, conductiong from the heavens the same sort of missions as those carried out by ground forces. Flying over land or sea, courageous pilots bombarded their enemies below with bombs and cannons, and executed aerial duels when enemy aircraft apporached. The Avro Lancaster, the most famous heavy bomber used by the Royal Canadian Air Force in the Second World War, earned a reputation as an extraordinary night bomber. In 1944, the Lancaster dropped the heaviest bombs carried by any bomber aircraft during World War II -- 12,000 pound "Tallboys." This near-perfect machine answered to finger-tip control and there were even instances of aerial acrobatics with the Lancaster performing loops and barrel-rolls, both intentionally and otherwise. Carrying a crew of seven or eight, the Lancaster flew all types of missions -- among the more notable were the attacks on the Mohne and Eder Dams in 1943, the heavy attack on the German rocket testing station at Peenemunde, and the sinking of the German battleship, Tirpitz. In postwar years, the converted bomber served Canada in air/sea rescue, maritime and photographic reconnaissance.
