Mel Crawford: Bahrain Scenes Located in the Persian Gulf, Bahrain is an independent sheikdom consisting of several tiny islands. Formerly a British protectorate, Bahrain gained its independence in 1971, and became a part of the Arab League of Nations. Bahrain has a total area of 371 square kilometers, although its largest and principal island, also called Bahrain, is only forty-eight kilometers wide and nineteen kilometers long. Most of the country consists of desert, and the average annual rainfall is less than five inches. Bahrain's summers are hot and humid with temperatures often rising above one hundred degrees Fahrenheit. The people of this island nation are mainly Arabs of various origin, although there are also a substantial number of Indians, Pakistanis, Europeans and Americans. Manamah, the country's capital and principal economic city, is located on the main island of Bahrain. This city serves as headquarters for Bahrain's important fishing and pearling industries, and contains a valuable seaport that can accommodate massive seagoing vessels. Pearling was the country's most important economic activity for years, primarily because the quality and abundance of pearls found in the Persian Gulf were unsurpassed. Since the discovery of oil in 1932, however, petroleum production has provided over seventy percent of the sheikdom's total income. Several other minor industries have been introduced into Bahrain recently including the manufacturing of products such as aluminum, plastics, ships and soft drinks.
