Chris Calle: China Clipper Airplane Combo Pan American's first pilot, Captain Edwin C. Musick, is credited with many firsts in aviation, but the one for which he is best known is piloting the inaugural airmail flight of the China Clipper from San Francisco to Manila, November 22-29, 1935. As the first airmail flight between the continental United States and the Orient, the Clipper's journey drew tremendous public attention. The cachet featured on this Proofcard depicts the speech made by Musick to reporters in Hawaii after the first leg of his journey. The China Clipper's Air Mail Service crossed the Pacific to the Philippines by way of Hawaii, Midway, Wake, and Guam. Prior to Musick's flight, the quickest way to the Orient was to spend three weeks on a boat. The Pan Am Clipper, which stopped overnight along the route, reduced that to a mere six days.
