Stanley Paine: Boeing 747 284B The Boeing 747 284B featured here is an historic airplane. It was the first of the "wide body" jet transports and it remains the largest airliner put into service to date. In the late 1960s, supersonic transport was being very seriously considered by the major aircraft manufacturers. The sheer size of the Boeing 747, therefore, surpassed the expectations of many people. Now known affectionately as the "Jumbo Jet", the first order for twenty-five of these 747 aircraft was placed by Pan Am in 1966. At the time, most other airlines were of the opinion that the 747 was oversized. The 747's cabin capacity accommodated three times as many passengers as any previous jet airliner. This fact alone greatly stimulated the holiday package tour business worldwide.
