David K. Stone: William Edward Boeing A perfectionist and a man who did not believe in failure, Bill Boeing seemed destined for success as a youth. And succeed he did, first in the timber business, then with airplanes. In 1916 he established the Pacific Aero Products Company which later became the Boeing Airplane Company. In 1919, Boeing and his pilot carried the first sack of international air mail from Vancouver to Seattle. Eventually, the company entered the domestic air mail business and then, in 1927, Boeing designed and built a fleet of 40-A transports which led to the formation of the Boeing Transport Company. Later, this efficient airline system became United Air Lines. Bill Boeing could see great possibilities available for airplane manufacturers and airplane operators who teamed up their efforts so he and some partners formed United Aircraft and Transport Corporation. Quickly, it became the greatest power in American Aviation. However, in 1934, the government ordered the corporation dissolved. After this, Boeing walked away from the airplane industry. Still, because of his extraordinary contributions to aviation in his 18-year career, Bill Boeing will forever be remembered as a pioneer of flight.
