Basil Smith: EMB 120 Brasilia Airplane As a need arose in Brazil for a small, well-designed regional air-transport, a Brazilian aeronautic corporation was there to answer the call. In 1974, the Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica began to conceptualize a special twenty-one seat airplane that could serve the needs of regional air travelers. After many setbacks, and technological problems, work on the plane was finally started on May 6, 1981. Using only the most modern computerized components and sturdy -- but lightweight -- materials, the first prototype was slowly and carefully put together ... piece by piece. After nine years of planning and construction, this unique airplane was finally completed and rolled off the assembly line on June 30, 1983. Several weeks of testing and retesting followed. Then, on July 27, 1983, the plane was taxied onto the runway for the first time. In a colorful celebration, the new plane was christened Brasilia ... named after Brazil's ultra-modern capital city. With a test pilot and the plane's Chief Engineer as its crew, the Brasilia sped down the runway. The plane's sleek, shiny body, and swept-back T-type tail gave it an elegant, yet racy look.
