David K. Stone: Walter H. Beech
By the time Walter H. Beech was twenty-six, his love of flying had earned him the position of United States Army Aviator. Following World War I, the daring and skilled pilot, Walter Beech, joined the exhibition pilots, dazzling Americans in nearly every state with his amazing antics in the air. But, his real interest -- and genius -- lay in another field of aeronautics -- aircraft design and manufacture. So, in 1921, Walter Beech joined the Swallow Airplane Company where he quickly rose to the rank of General Manager. In 1924, Beech left Swallow to organize the Travel Air Manufacturing Company which became the world's largest producer of both monoplane and biplane commercial aircraft. In time, Travel Air merged with the Curtiss-Wright Airplane Company and Walter Beech became the new corporation's President. In 1932, he and his wife founded the Beech Aircraft Company. The Company built many outstanding aircraft, including the Model 17, or Staggerwing plane, which is today considered a classic aircraft. When World War II broke out, Beech Aircraft Company supplied the Allies with several outstanding aircraft. Artwork Copyright © 1982 Unicover Corporation.
