Chris Calle: Carousel Animals Combo/Horse and Tiger Like a moment caught in time, the carousel creates vivid imagery. The thought evokes happy carnival sounds: children laughing, game hosts urging customers on, craftsmen selling their wares. And there, in the midst of it all, its loud, playful organ music beckoning, sits the magnificent carousel. Spinning in a maze of fantastic -- almost mythical -- creatures, each seeming to leap up and then methodically lapse down, gleaming in the light, the carousel bears a magic all its own. Children's eyes shine, for this is truly a ride -- not too fast, not too scary -- a ride as beautiful and exciting as their own imaginations can make it. Choosing the most wonderful mount they can find, the children ready for the ride. And, as the music starts, they turn slowly. Then, faster and faster they ride. Some imagine themselves medieval knights, while others are Arabian horsemen wielding flashing swords, and still others are raucous western cowboys. No matter, the magic of the carousel has captured their hearts and holds them fully entranced. Adults, too, get a special glint in their eyes when they spot the beautiful carousel. Perhaps it is a memory they hold, perhaps it is the very joy of the machine, but even those too shy to ride seem to enjoy the sight. The carousel is indeed a magnificent, magical ride, bringing a special kind of laughter to many Americans' lives -- and a truly special gift of happiness to the years of childhood.
