Chris Calle: Virginia Statehood Though New Hampshire's decision to ratify the U.S. Constitution guaranteed the document would go into effect, the first nine states of the new Union watched with anxiety as storm clouds of opposition formed in Virginia. For Virginia was large and powerful, and without its participation in the new experiment many felt that the Union could not survive. Virginia hosted a colorful cast of politicians, some for and some against the controversial question of ratification. Those who looked for a passionate exchange were not disappointed. On the Anti-Federalist side was the powerful person of Patrick Henry, backed by Governor Edmund Randolph, George Mason, Richard Henry Lee, William Grayson and Thomas Nelson. And those they faced on the Federalist side were just as famous. James Madison led the Federalists in Convention, while George Washington kept a close eye on the proceedings from afar. Thomas Jefferson, another prominent Virginian, while voicing some reservations, avidly favored the Constitution's vision of unity for the states. Working calmly and logically against the tirades of Patrick Henry, the Federalists chose a path of compromise, suggesting a subsequent bill of rights and amendments. Thus did the pro-Constitution Federalist leader James Madison -- and those who worked with him -- sway the vote in Virginia. Before it was done, even Patrick Henry pledged his allegiance to the new nation and, on June 25, 1788, Virginia delegates voted to ratify the United States Constitution.
