Chris Calle: Bald Eagle Wood Carving Soaring free and proud, the Bald Eagle symbolizes the spirit of all Americans. Since the days when America's liberty was first conceived, the vitality and pride of the Bald Eagle have been a guiding force for the nation. So it should come as no surprise that this magnificent bird was chosen to grace the Great Seal of the United States. In 1776, a committee consisting of Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and John Adams was directed by the Continental Congress "to bring in a device for a seal of the United States of America." After much debate, the committee agreed on a design, which Congress approved in 1782. Though the wild turkey was Franklin's choice, the Bald Eagle was ultimately chosen to appear on the Seal as America's national symbol. The Eagle's likeness is also found on the back of most U.S. circulating coins with a denomination of 10¢ or higher, and the United States Postal Service has adopted the Eagle's regal countenance for its logo. Even in folk art, America reflects the influence of this mighty bird. In the early 1800s, as the towns of New England forged a living from the sea, figureheads of the Eagle often led ships to bountiful catches and safe ports. Crafting figureheads out of wood became an art, and the Eagle, carved in fine detail, was a favorite subject.
