The magnificent Eagle, symbolizing freedom, strength and pride, has profoundly influenced American civilization from early Native American Indian cultures to modern times. Native Americans believed the Eagle embodied the spiritual power of nature, as well as possessing physical attributes, such as speed, ferocity and sharpness of eye. The Eagle was selected as America's national symbol on June 20, 1782, when the Great Seal of the United States was adopted by Congress. Prominently displayed in the center of the seal, a majestic Eagle -- representing sovereignty and pride -- grips several arrows and an olive branch in its talons, signifying America's power to make peace and war. On the Eagle's breast appears a shield suggesting the nations flag. Six red stripes on a white field symbolize valor and courage, while the blue upper border represents justice and vigilance. In the early 1800s, craftsmen from New England often carved the image of the Eagle on figureheads for ships, as well as nautical furniture and architecture. It was believed that the qualities of the Eagle were passed on to those who sailed under its protection. Today, the Eagle is a threatened species in danger of extinction. This symbolic protection of America requires the protection of all American's if it is to survive.
