William Faulkner created an original and distinctively "Southern" vocabulary in his work. His highly personal writing style evolved from his youth and upbringing. Born in New Albany, Mississippi in 1897, he began his career as a novelist in 1926 with the publication of Soldier's Pay. A prolific writer, his publication of Sanctuary in 1931 finally brought Faulkner critical acclaim and financial success. And, after World War II, his works were receiving international recognition as well. The groundswell of praise for Faulkner's work culminated in a 1950 Nobel Prize for Literature. In his acceptance speech, he defined his role as a novelist: "...the writer's duty is to help man endure by lifting his heart...by reminding him of the courage and honor and hope and pride and compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past." Perhaps most illustrative of his visionary style and his theme of Southern decadence and racial inequality is his master-work, The Sound and the Fury, published in 1929.
