Chris Calle: William Jennings Bryan Known as the "Great Commoner," William Jennings Bryan was an active force in American politics for thirty years ... and emerged as the first spokesman for those disregarded by the industrialization of the United States in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Bryan began his career as a lawyer in Lincoln, Nebraska ... however, his interests quickly turned to politics, and in 1890 he won a seat in Congress. He soon became known for his brilliant oratory and his ability to capture the imaginations of rural people bewildered by the changes brought on by the Industrial Revolution. With the backing of the common man, Bryan took up the presidential campaign against President McKinley and the "money men of the East." In this heated campaign, Bryan became the first presidential candidate to travel extensively and to use the railroads to take his case to the people. Bryan lost the 1896 election, but remained the Democratic Party leader. He ran for the Presidency in 1900, again losing to McKinley . . . and in 1908 he lost the presidential election to William Howard Taft. Despite these three defeats, Bryan never lost his passion for politics. He continued to work with Democratic leaders and helped pave the way for such important reforms as women's suffrage and equitable income tax laws. When President Woodrow Wilson was elected, he appointed Bryan as Secretary of State. Bryan continued to serve his country in this post, and later as a political lecturer until his death in 1925.
