Chris Calle: Yes to Life-No to Drugs/Hands Opening The United Nations began its involvement in the field of drug control in 1946, when it assumed the drug control functions and responsibilities that were formerly carried out by the League of Nations. Since that time the United Nations has hosted several conventions and conferences that deal specifically with the problems of drug abuse and subsequent solutions. The United Nations has attempted to deal with world drug abuse through the adoption of resolutions relating to the problem. During a 1984 convention on the Control of Drug Trafficking and Drug Abuse, the assembly termed trafficking in narcotic drugs and drug abuse an "international criminal activity," and stated that this problem demanded the utmost attention and maximum priority. In 1987, the United Nations unanimously decided to hold a conference dealing with the increasing problem of international drug trafficking and abuse. The International Conference on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, was organized to elicit interest in the international community regarding the importance of restricting both the access and abuse of illegal drugs. This important 1987 Conference dealt with illicit trafficking and drug abuse at the national, regional and international level.
