Gene Boyer: Indian Head Penny The rare 1877 Indian Head Cent was designed by James B. Longacre for the United States Mint and was first minted in 1859. The last year of the Indian Head Cent was 1909, when it was replaced by the Lincoln Cent. Many numismatists maintain that the Indian maiden shown on the coin is really a white girl, Longacre's daughter, Sarah. Others believe the model is the Venus Acroupi, a Greek statue in the Vatican museum. In any event, nobody seems to believe that the Indian head is based on a real Indian. Thus, the irony of the name, the "Indian Head" cent. In the realm of coin collecting, the 1877 Indian Head Cent is very rare.
