Gene Boyer: Hubert H. Humphrey Hubert Humphrey was born in Wallace, South Dakota, in 1911. He received a degree in pharmacy during the Depression but eventually acquired both a B.S. and M.S. in political science. In 1944 Humphrey became President Franklin Roosevelt's state campaign manager. Humphrey parlayed his role in uniting the state Democratic and Farm-Labor parties into two successful terms as mayor of Minneapolis. His evangelical style of oratory brought him national attention at the 1948 Democratic Convention and assured his election to the U.S. Senate, where he earned a reputation as a fire-breathing liberal and won acclaim for securing bipartisan support for the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty and the Civil Rights Act. In 1964 President Lyndon Johnson chose Humphrey as his running mate and the team easily defeated the Republican ticket. As Vice-President Humphrey actively promoted administration civil rights policies, but his defense of President Johnson's Viet Nam war escalation enabled Republican Richard Nixon to defeat him in the 1968 presidential election. Another unsuccessful bid in 1972 ended his White House aspirations, but he faithfully served Minnesota as senator until his death in 1978. Artwork Copyright © 1978 Unicover Corporation.
