An independent thinker with great charismatic appeal, Robert Francis Kennedy directed his political career with enthusiasm and devotion. He had planned to go into politics since his youth. Gaining early recognition in the United States Senate, Kennedy went on to become U.S. Attorney General. Then in 1965, he became the United States Senator from New York. As his rise in popularity accelerated, Kennedy became known professionally as a dynamic person who could get things done. Yet, many of his followers were most impressed by the private man, the Robert Kennedy with strong family ties and simple tastes. They admired his easy smile and enjoyed his honest wit. In a sense, Robert Kennedy was a celebrity, just as likely to be featured in a magazine or newspaper for his vacation choice as for his political stance. In the last months of 1966, both the Gallup and Harris public opinion polls showed Senator Robert Kennedy as the Democratic and independent voter's choice for the 1968 presidency. He immediately started a campaign based on national unity that attracted young and old alike. In June of 1968, after winning the California primary, Robert Kennedy was assassinated. Though he never became president, his influence on the mood and spirit of America was lasting.
