Chris Calle: Silvered Leaf Monkey
The Silvered Leaf Monkey is a diurnal arboreal species which lives in troops of 12 to 25 -- one male, several females and young. The male guards the troop against predators and keeps them together. It is found in Indonesia, Malaysia, southern Thailand, Cambodia, southern Vietnam, and southern Lao People's Democratic Republic. As well, this monkey also lives in Bako National Park on Borneo, where monkeys are a main attraction. It moves through the forests on all fours, and spends most of its life in the trees of the primary growth, mangrove, riverine, and coastal forests of low altitudes. However, some of them have been observed living on the ground. It weighs about 30 pounds and is 18 to 26 inches long, plus it has an eight-inch long tail. Its coat is a brownish-grey to black, with white-tipped hairs which give a silvery gloss, thus the name "Silvered" Leaf Monkey. It has a high crest of hair on the top of its head, which can be very distinctive in older monkeys, and its blackish face is covered by long whiskers that grow over its ears. In contrast, newborns are bright orange, with black hands and feet and no crest on the crown of their heads. The Silvered Leaf Monkey prefers to eat immature leaves because they are more digestible, but they also eat occasional buds, fruits, flowers and young shoots. The primary threat to its survival is the reduction of its reserved forest habitat due to human encroachment. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood® First Day Cover for the U.N.
