Chris Calle: Sportive Lemur This saucer-eyed, nocturnal creature is found only in the forests of Madagascar and Comoro Islands off the southeastern coast of Africa. A lower primate, the lemur almost never walks on all fours but descends from the trees on occasion to take a brief, upright walk. Many species are extinct, but about 20 species of the lemurs of Madagascar have managed to survive in roughly four groups: dwarf lemurs, cat-size lemurs including the sportive lemur, monkey-like lemurs and the squirrel-like aye-ayes. The Sportive Lemur is light-gray to grayish-brown to chestnut brown, and about the size of a cat. It is solitary and vigorously defends its territory against members of the same sex. Young are carried in their mother's mouth until they are old enough to hang on to her fur by themselves. The Sportive Lemur has long limbs, flexible toes and fingers, a long nose, and a long furry tail which is not prehensile. It communicates through scent glands on its bottom and its feet, by waving its long bushy tail, and by calling to one another. Since it eats mostly leaves and bark, alternated with fruits and flowers, its digestive system is equipped with millions of bacteria to aid digestion. It can live to the age of eighteen. The main threats to its survival are from deforestation and hunting. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood® First Day Cover for the U.N.
